About Us

My first gaming console was an NES. I remember playing Super Mario Brothers and being absolutely awful. It wasn’t until the Sega Mega Drive came out (Genesis for you North American folk) that I really began to hit my stride. I spent hours playing Double Dragon with my friends, devastating the robotic wildlife population in Sonic, and helping Taz escape from Mars. I also dabbled in some PC gaming with Doom and Magic Carpet (check it out if you ever get the chance)

When I moved to the USA I had a chance to play a 3DO and my cousin had an N64. Between Goldeneye, Banjo Kazooie, Mario 64, and the others we didn’t get much sleep. When I accidentally deleted by cousins saved game on Banjo Kazooie I had a panic attack and had to get a new save up to where he was.

Those games were great, but it wasn’t until the release of Final Fantasy 7 that I truly fell in love with video gaming. I racked up 100 hours easily and savoured every experience. My heart broke with the rest of the world when Aerith died, and I agonised over which players to include in my team (Cloud, Cid, Barret, and Vincent IIRC). When I finally got Omnislash and Knights of the Round I was really cruising.

(A Link to the Past and Orcarina of Time were also very important to me)

Some of the fondest times in my life are playing games with friends. Big Halo LAN parties, playing Battlefield Vietnam and choosing your favourite songs, and throwing remote mines at people in Goldeneye, and pulling all nighters playing Asheron’s Call or Ultima Online. There would always be great smack talk and it brought everyone closer, despite the odd rage quit here and there.

Sidequest grew out of that experience. I have always felt like I was a part of gamer culture (even if I wasn’t the most successful multiplayer competitor), and I had a hard time finding things that I wanted to wear to express that. Now I have a shop inspired both by nostalgia and popular culture.
